“Though he’s an avowed R.E.M. fetishist, his music builds upon a range of influences that extends far beyond the catalog and style of the revered Athens, Ga., foursome.”
Bio:
Asheville-based singer-songwriter Joe Hooten, originally from Macon, Georgia, is the force behind Tin Roof Echo, a project rooted in introspective songwriting, melodic grit, and a strong DIY ethos. Since his 2014 debut The Original Plan, Hooten has released seven albums blending indie rock and alt-country with a raw, lived-in feel.
His latest, Flowers Falling, was recorded with producer Kevin Boggs and mastered by John Keane (R.E.M., Indigo Girls), and features contributions from members of Steep Canyon Rangers and Drive-By Truckers, delivering warm, country-leaning songs with understated punch.
No stranger to festival stages and intimate venues, from Enofest and Finsterfest to Asheville Punk Fest, AVLSounds Fest, the Grey Eagle, and the Orange Peel, Hooten has shared bills with artists like Scott Miller, Kenny Roby, Freedy Johnston, David Childers, Jason Narducy, Pylon Reenactment Society, Agent Orange, and Soul Asylum.
Offstage, Hooten’s DIY approach extends into the community. He co-organizes the Bandcamp benefit compilation Caverns of Gold, launched the Asheville City Schools Instrument Donation Drive, placing 250+ instruments with students, and started the “Concerts on the Hall” series at Asheville High/SILSA, giving young musicians a stage, often for the first time. He has also volunteered with Restring Appalachia and worked to support music education in the Asheville community. Over the last several years he's hosted benefit concerts at the Grey Eagle to raise money for Asheville Middle School’s 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C.
Hooten is also a long time member of Asheville punk band PINKEYE and is currently making waves with a new punk project, Dead Eggs. His work with both projects reflects the same DIY spirit that runs through Tin Roof Echo, creating music, putting on shows, and building community from the ground up.
Whether with Tin Roof Echo, PINKEYE, or Dead Eggs, Hooten’s work is grounded in connection, building songs and community that last beyond the set.
